A. PENGERTIAN ATAP

Atap adalah bagian dari suatu bangunan yang berfungsi sebagai penutup seluruh ruangan yang ada dibawahnya terhadap pengaruh panas, hujan, angin, debu atau untuk keperluan perlindungan. Syarat – syarat atap yang harus di penuhi antara lain :
• Konstruksi atap harus kuat menahan beratnya sendiri dan tahan terhadap tekanan maupun tiupan angin
• Pemilihan bentuk atap yang akan dipakai hendaknya sedemikian rupa, sehingga menambah keindahaan serta kenyamanaan bertempat tinggal bagi penghuninya
• Agar rangka atap tidak mudah diserang oleh rayap/bubuk, perlu diberi lapisan pengawet
• Bahan penutup atap harus tahan terhadap pengaruh cuaca
• Kemiringan atau sudut lereng atap harus disesuaikan dengan jenis bahan penutupnya maka kemiringannya dibuat lebih landai.

B. MACAM – MACAM ATAP

a) Atap Datar
Meskipun bentuk atap ini dikatakan atap datar, akan tetapi pada permukaan atap selalu dibuat sedikit miring untuk menyalurkan air hujan ke lubang talang. Bahan yang sesuai untuk atap ini biasanya digunakan campuran beton bertulang. Agar dibawah atap ini tidak terlalu panas atau dingin maka perlu dibuat ruang isolasi diatas langit-langit (plafon). Atap datar digunakan untuk rumah mewah seperti rumah bertingkat

b) Atap Sandar
Atap sandar biasanya disebut juga atap sengkuap atau atap temple. Pada umumya atap ini terdiri dari sebuah bidang atap miring yang bagian tepi atasnya bersandar atau menempel pada tembok bangunan induk ( tembok yang menjulang tinggi ). Pada bentuk atap sandar menggunakan konstruksi setengah kuda – kuda untuk mendukung balok gording. Kemiringan atapnya dapat diambil 30 derajat atau 40 derajat bila memakai bahan penutup dari genteng. Untuk bahan penutup dari semen asbes gelombang dan seng gelombang kemiringan atapnya dapat diambil 20 derajat atau 25 derajat, yang pada pemasangannya tidak memerlukan reng.

c) Atap Pelana
Atap pelana sebagai penutup ruangan terdiri dari dua bidang atap miring yang tepi atasnya bertemu pada satu garis lurus, dinamakan bubungan. Tepi bawah bidang atap, dimana air itu meninggalkan atap dinamakan tepi teritis. Pada tepi teritis ini dapat dipasang talang air. Bahan penutupnya banyak yang menggunakan genteng biasa ( genteng kampung ) maupun seng gelombang. Bentuk atap pelana digunakan untuk rumah – rumah sederhana. Rumah dengan atap ini banyak dijumpai dipedesaan seperti Bali, Jawa Timur, Jawa Tengah dan Jawa Barat.

d) Atap Tenda
Atap ini dinamakan atap tenda karena bentuknya menyerupai pasangan tenda. Ukuran panjang dan lebar bangunan yang menggunakan atap ini adalah sama, ini berarti terdiri dari empat bidang atap dan empat jurai dengan bentuk, ukuran maupun lereng yang sama yang bertemu di satu titik tertinggi yaitu pada tiang penggantung ( maklar ). Atap ini banyak digunakan untuk bangunan kantor, pendopo, dan bangunan untuk tempat tinggal.

e) Atap Menara
Bentuk atap ini serupa dengan bentuk atap tenda yaitu mempunyai empat bidang atap dengan sudut apitnya yang sama besar serta ujung – ujung bagian atasnya bertemu pada satu titik yang cukup tinggi. Atap menara mempunyai jurai luar yang sama panjang dan ujung bagian atas bertemu pada satu titik yang berada pada bagian ujung atas gantung atau maklar. Bentuk atap semacam ini banyak digunakan untuk bangunan – bangunan gereja.
f) Atap Joglo
Atap joglo merupakan atap jurai luar yang patah ke dalam seolah-olah terdiri dari dua bagian yaitu bagian bawah yang mempunyai sudut lereng atap lebih kecil atau landai dan bagian atas akan tampak bagian – bagian bidang atap yang berbentuk trapesium.
